GOITRE

What is Goitre?

Enlarged thyroid gland which can easily visible and palpable with neck in normal position. Pathologically, goitre result from follicular cell hyperplasia at one or both sites within the thyroid gland.

Reasons: Usual reason of goitre is hereditary and familial, also enviroment and endemic conditions have an effect on thyroid gland enlargement which causes with different types of goitre such as diffuse type and Nodular type of goitre.

Symptoms

-Dysphagia

-Voice changes

Diagnosis

-Thyroid function test which includes TSH and free T4

-Thoracic CT

-Preoperative laryngoscopy

Treatment

Thyroid lobectomy : operable technic, if there is asymmetric enlargement with thyroid gland.

Total Thyroidectomy : Feasible technic, if the enlarged thyroid has obstructive symptoms and risk for morbidity.

Oral levothyroxine
